Interviewing: Five Tips & Questions for Success

Everyone has to attend an interview at some point in their life whether it’s for a job, internship or scholarship. The anticipation and nerves sometimes sneak up on you and can make you crazy. Don’t let anything get in your way though, be prepared.  These tips will help settle your nerves and ease interviewing jitters. You are one step closer to landing your dream job, be confident.

  1. Do your research on the company you’re applying for
    • Why do you want this position?
    • What skills do you have that qualify you for this position?
    • What did you do at your (__) internship/job?
    • Tell me something interesting about yourself?
    • Tell me about a situation where you had to manage a crisis?
  2. Anticipate questions that the interviewee will ask you
  3. Come up with your own questions
    • What qualities are you looking for in the person you anticipate on hiring?
    • What is expected of the person you’re looking to hire in the next six months?
    • Based on my research, I noticed you distinguish yourself from competitors because…Can you tell me what else sets your company apart from the competition?
    • When will you be making a decision?
    • What is the best way for me to follow-up?
  4. Follow-up with an email after your first initial interview and re-emphasize your interest
  5. Follow-up with a thank you letter (a real direct-mail letter) after your second interview and make it personal
