Walk a day in your intern’s shoes

Internships are an essential part of college, no matter what field you plan on going in to. They give you out of the classroom experience and help you gain insight to the career you’re pursuing. Often times interns panic with questions before starting their internship, but we don’t really think about what our potential bosses are thinking. This week, I’ve decided to talk about the differences between a good and bad boss in hopes to shed light on problems interns face.

5 Qualities of a Good Intern Boss:

  1. Plan: Have a plan in mind for your intern before they begin. A simple first step is to know what their role will be in and/or out of the office.
  2. Introduce: Help your intern learn the importance of networking. Show them around and introduce them to your team.
  3. Engage: Take your intern to out of the office events and make use of their specific skills.
  4. Explain: Show your intern the projects that you’re working on so they can see what a day in your shoes is like
  5. Communicate: Follow-up each week or month to see how your intern is handling and maintaining their position

This brings me to my next topic: how your intern boss can be not-so-good. All of the above qualities are basics that a boss should have. With that being said, a bad intern boss is one who is completely opposite of the above points. Your boss should make sure they are planning, introducing, engaging, explaining and communicating, but there is one quality they absolutely shouldn’t have and that’s taking advantage of their intern.

A boss should be grateful to have extra help, especially because most interns are working for free. If you start to feel yourself being taken advantage of, tell your advisor and seek advice before making any decisions. Keep in mind though, just because they’re working you hard doesn’t mean they’re taking advantage of you. As I stated before, be sure to seek advice before making a decision or comment.
